of a bubble (F is the diele~tric onstant of liquid helium) gives the class~cal *'Coulomb radius" of the bubble (this value is accurate for the bubbles considered ( 5 , 6)). For typical charges Z of 10510' electrons, this yields radii between 10 and 100 pm. The electrons in a bubble are confined to a narrow region of only a fcw Bngstrorns width close to the bubble surface, owing to their mutual Coulomb repulsion ( 5 ) , and thus constitute a spherically symmetric two-dimensional Coulomb system with a considerably higher density (10'"electrons/cm2 and more) than in the free-surface case. Thus, the multielectron bubbles might provide information on a regime in the phase diagram of the 2D electron system that has hardly been accessible ta experiments so far. We report here initial experiments with such bubbles, measuring t he~ r charge and concentrating on some dynamical properties like their motion in the liquld helium, oscillations of the bubbles, and their stability. Electrons nn the surface of liquid helium are localized in the direction perpendicular to the surface in a potential well consisting of the image 11otentiaI (plus holding potential) and a potential barrier of l eV duc to the Pauli exclusion principle (see ref. 1 and references cited therein). Studying electrons on curved surfaces by trapping and manipulating multielectron bubbles in liquid helium.
Investigations of two-dimensional electron systems (2DES) have been achieved with two model experimental systems, covering two distinct, non-overlapping regimes of the 2DES phase diagram, namely the quantum liquid phase in semiconducting heterostructures and the classical phases observed in electrons confined above the surface of liquid helium. Multielectron bubbles in liquid helium offer an ex...
متن کاملUnexpected Hydrodynamic Behavior of Multielectron Bubbles in Liquid Helium I
We have investig4ated multielectron bubbles (with charges Z,,, 10 6 electrons) in normal liquid He. The drift velocity in an electric field and the charge of the bubbles were measured simultaneously. We found the drag coeJficient to be over an order of magnitude higher than expected from ordinary hydrodynamics. The velocities did not show a correlation with the charge and could vary up to a fac...
متن کاملFission of Multielectron Bubbles in Liquid Helium
The stability of multielectron bubbles (MEBs) in liquid helium is investigated using the liquid-drop model for fissioning nuclei. Whereas a critical positive pressure can make the bubble unstable against fissioning, a small negative pressure suffices to introduce a restoring force preventing any small deformation of the bubble to grow. We also find that there exists an energy barrier making MEB...

We discuss the influence of two-dimensional hexatic order on capillary waves and undulation modes in spherical and cylindrical geometries. In planar geometries, extended bond-orientational order has only a minor effect on the fluctuations of liquid surfaces or lipid bilayers. However, in curved geometries, the long-wavelength spectrum of these ripples is altered. We calculate this frequency shi...
متن کاملSurface Instabilities and Generation of Multielectron Bubbles Under Pulsed Electric Fields
We studied the development of surface instabilities leading to the generation of multielectron bubbles (MEBs) in superfluid helium upon the application of a pulsed electric field. We found the statistical distribution of the charge of individual instabilities to be strongly dependent on the duration of the electric field pulse. The rate and probability of generation of these instabilities in re...
